How did a rocky, swampy stretch of land—once considered too far uptown—become the most visited park in the country?
In this workshop, we’ll explore how New York’s 19th-century elite envisioned a grand public park in Manhattan “to serve as a ventilator to a densely populated city”. Discover how the designers were chosen, what existed on the land before, and the complex (and often painful) story of the communities displaced to make way for Central Park.
