The Gilded Age Palaces of Newport, RI

What began as a scattering of eclectic seaside “cottages” along the cliffs of Newport, Rhode Island evolved by the 1890s into a glittering parade of American palaces, each striving to outshine the next. In this richly illustrated talk, featuring nearly one hundred vintage and contemporary photographs, explore how the newly wealthy of the Gilded Age turned to architect Richard Morris Hunt to create some of the most extravagant homes in America, many of which are public museums today.

Led by Ginny Poleman – A graduate of Cornell University and a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide, Ginny offers tours for the American Institute of Architects on the Classic Harbor Cruise Line's architectural tours and is an experienced guide for the Municipal Art Society and New York City’s largest art museum.
